The Brooklyn Nets are in the midst of their rebuild as they look to build the team back into a winner after the franchise decided to change gears during the 2022-23 season. Brooklyn has been trying to be patient with the rebuild by building through the draft and while there are some nice, young pieces on the team, it’s fair to wonder how far away the playoffs are.
” The Nets are top five in both money and draft for the third straight season but bottom five in players,” Dean Oliver wrote of the Nets for ESPN when discussing their future outlook. ESPN recently put together its rankings for all 30 NBA teams for where each team would rank three years from now and the Nets ranked 24th with Oliver offering an explanation as to why.

“Usually, teams in that situation are two years away from being about average or better,” Oliver continued on the Nets. “But given Brooklyn’s low win predictions for this season, the franchise might have actually been two years away from being two years away back in 2024 (to paraphrase Fran Fraschilla).” As Oliver alluded to, Brooklyn is expected to be one of the worst teams in the league this season.
According to ESPN, the Nets rank 21st or worst in four categories: players, management, draft, and money, showing that Brooklyn isn’t looked at favorably in most of the metrics to measure a rebuild. ESPN does rank the Nets 11th in terms of the market which makes sense given that New York City is one of the most attractive markets in the United States of America and has plenty to offer prospective players.
Even with the Nets trading for forward Julius Randle this offseason, Brooklyn has some work to do as it pertains to acquiring talent, which explains them being ranked 21st in the players category. However, if the Nets are two years away from being able to compete for a playoff spot, Brooklyn may have to make some moves soon in order to speed that process up a tad.
