The UMSNT continue their history-making World Cup campaign tonight in the Round of 16.
They’ll face Belgium in what’s come to be a contentious matchup.
In the United States’ Round of 32 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Folarin Balogun received a red card making him ineligible for today’s match. However, in a shocking twist, FIFA rescinded the red card so Balogun is available to play tonight.
United States vs. Belgium: what to know
- What: FIFA World Cup 2026, Round of 16
- When: July 6, 8 p.m. ET
- Where: Lumen Field (Seattle, Washington)

Balogun’s one-game suspension could not be appealed according to FIFA’s own regulations, FIFA officials cited Article 27 of its disciplinary code when overturning the red card; it’s the same precedent used to defer Cristiano Ronaldo’s suspension in the fall so he wouldn’t miss games at this World Cup.
The Royal Belgian Football Association attempted to appeal the decision, but FIFA rendered the appeal inadmissible as they are “not a party to the proceedings.”
Additionally, President Trump confirmed he called FIFA president Gianni Infantino to discuss the red card.
The winner of today’s match will move on to the quarterfinals to face the winner of Portugal vs. Spain on July 10. For the USMNT, a win tonight would put them in just their second World Cup quarterfinal ever.
