Hugh Jackman's 'The Death Of Robin Hood' Ending Explained, The Dark Yet Poetic End Of The Anti-Hero

The Death of Robin Hood was released in theatres across the US on June 19, 2026, and has since become one of the most talked-about films, giving ‘Robin Hood’ an ending unlike any we imagined. Now, the director of the film, Michael Sarnoski, has reflected on the ending of the film and explained how it fits with what he had in mind.

The Death of Robin Hood ending explained

Michael Sarnoski is the creative mind behind The Death of Robin Hood. However, it turns ‘Robin Hood’ from a figure of legend into a human being by making him more of an antagonist. In The Death of Robin Hood, Hugh Jackman’s ‘Robin’ is a self-described “murderous brigand,” an outlaw whose exploits were driven just as much by greed as by justice, if not more so. He and his ‘Merry Men’ leave a trail of bodies in their path, which becomes a roost for ‘Robin’, who has spent much of his years paying his “blood debts,” aka vengeful family members of people he’s killed coming to return the favour.

However, his last quest to help ‘Little John’ take back his family farm leaves ‘Robin’ wounded, and the former takes him to an isolated prioress named ‘Sister Brigid’, who is known to heal all who come to her. That’s when ‘Robin’ finds peace for the first time. He even becomes the unlikely guardian of ‘Little John’s’ daughter (Faith Delaney), who seeks out ‘Robin’ after her father is murdered. It causes ‘Robin’ to start to reassess his one wish for “a good death.” Talking about the same, Sarnoski explains to Inverse:

“On some level, he really wants to die, but he has a certain expectation for what that death is going to be. And then the movie becomes about him readjusting his understanding of what the right death might look like. And that’s why we start in this intensely violent place and then go to this kind of serene, more transcendent kind of place, because that’s sort of the transformation he’s having with his own understanding of the death that he’s seeking.”

We further see that ‘Robin’ wants to die because of his guilt over what he has done. However, before that happens, several important events take place. A young man arrives at the priory. However, ‘Robin’ suspects that he is somehow linked to his friend, ‘Lil John’s’ death. At the same time, ‘Leper’ makes two shocking revelations. First: ‘The Leper’ is someone ‘Robin’ attacked years ago, but spared him after cutting off his ear. Second: ‘Brigid’ is also one of ‘Robin’s’ victims, and he had killed her husband and children long ago, by trapping them inside a burning house.

Instead of going to ‘Brigid’, ‘The Leper’ asks ‘Robin’ to keep the truth hidden and protect the priory. However, ‘Robin’s’ newfound conscience keeps him from lying and he tells ‘Brigid’ everything. Livid, she almost kills him. However, stops herself. When ‘Robin’ asks her to finish him, accepting he deserves to die, she agrees and lets him bleed to death.

The Death of Robin Hood views the tale of ‘Robin Hood’ from a different lens

Michael Sarnoski explains how The Death of Robin Hood changes the story of ‘Robin Hood’ and says that for him, it was more of a mercy killing than revenge. He explains that ‘Brigid’ might have started her attack as revenge on ‘Robin’, but eventually helped him free himself from his guilt by letting him die. He was quoted as saying:

“I liked this idea that at the end it starts as a revenge killing and then it sort of transforms into a mercy killing, assisted suicide, and it becomes like the death itself is something that the two of them discover together. That goes back to that initial thing that I found so fascinating about the story: What does this quiet death in a sunlit church bedroom between these two people look like?”
