Berhampore: Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder Humayun Kabir, who sprang a surprise by winning at two seats in Murshidabad of West Bengal in this Assembly Election, declared on Thursday that he would retain one of them, Nowda, and vacate the other, Rejinagar, for his son, Golam Nabi Azad, to contest there on his party’s ticket in a bypoll later.

Mr Kabir told a party workers’ meeting at Narkelbari Ghat ground in Rejinagar, “I won in Rejinagar and Nowda. But I can’t retain both. On May 15, I will resign as the winning candidate from the Rejinagar seat before taking the oath. My son, Golam, will be the AJUP candidate there in the bypoll.”

Sounding confident about his son’s victory by a big margin at the seat, he said, “Rejinagar is my home turf where 1,23,536 voters supported me, leading to my victory by a margin of 58,876 votes. I am grateful to them. But I will keep a watch till the bypoll.” The AJUP founder defeated his nearest rival Bapan Das of BJP who got 64,660 votes. Trinamul Congress and Congress stood third and fourth respectively at the seat dominated by Muslim votebank.
