Series two of The Celebrity Traitors has been captivating BBC viewers, and the latest episodes have seen the Faithfuls make a major error of judgement, which resulted in ‘humiliation’ for one star.

The Celebrity Traitors star Romesh Ranganathan, 48, returned to his Radio 2 show on Saturday morning to find that questions had been flooding in from fans of the hit BBC series, and he couldn’t resist taking a swipe at his fellow contestants as he shared some behind-the-scenes gossip.

Romesh began by celebrating that he had made it through to the final week of the show as a Faithful, but admitted that he was faced with “utter humiliation” after Friday night’s episode aired.

BBC viewers were astounded to find that the Faithfuls had naively nominated the three Traitors, James Acaster, 41, Maya Jama, 32, and King Kenny, 29, as the most trustworthy, prompting host Claudia Winkleman to offer Kenny a “power” that would give him a second vote to banish a fellow player at the round table.

Romesh explained his embarrassment over the faux pas to his listeners: “I’ll tell you a couple of things. The first thing that I imagine, if you’ve been watching, that’s paramount in your mind is the complete and utter humiliation of being asked in the scarecrow task to pick our most Faithful people to potentially get the special power, and we chose the Traitors.

“I’m going to tell you now, not ideal. I had to stay off socials, just loads of people doing TikToks going, ‘oh my God how thick are they? This has got to be the worst set of Faithfuls I’ve ever seen in my life!’ More difficult than it looks! Anyway, that was humiliating, it was really humiliating.”

The comedian went on to admit that watching the show is a strange experience, as he is now aware of conversations between his fellow players that he had absolutely no idea about during filming.

He continued: “And the other thing, when you do the show they say to you, ‘there are two parts to doing this show, and the first part is actually filming the show, and then the second part is the show going out,’ because, obviously, you’re seeing stuff that you didn’t know was going on, and also I’m seeing conversations that I never had any awareness of.

“I’m seeing what the Traitors are up to, I had no awareness of that. I had no idea until it was shown on television what really happened in that shield challenge.”

The mission in question saw Maya and Kenny feeling let down by James, who had refused to help them when the Traitors were tasked with secretly stealing puzzle pieces from the Faithfuls, who were standing in the same room with blindfolds on.

Romesh clarified: “It’s only when I watched it that I realised what had actually gone on, and that there was basically a falling out!”

Defending himself, the radio presenter admitted that he was slightly “distracted” on the day, after he had managed to “exonerate myself by having some quite bad hay fever“, with Romesh’s sniffling during the mission proving to actress Sharon Rooney that he hadn’t moved from her side while the Traitors were sabotaging the shields, meaning that he was definitely a Faithful.

He quipped: “You sort of think to yourself, ‘am I going to embarrass myself on this show? Oh no, that’s right, my name’s Romesh, of course I am’. And that’s what happened. I’ve had, this is genuinely true, some hay fever herbal remedy companies get in touch and say, ‘we can help you out!’

“So if you see me in a partnership with one of those companies, you’ll know it’s a direct result of that challenge.”

Romesh and his Radio 2 colleague Sally Boazman then started reading out Celebrity Traitors questions from listeners, with one asking the star: “How did you feel doing the challenges?”

After all the drama that occurred in last week’s missions, in which contestants aim to win money for the prize fund alongside shields to protect themselves from murder, Romesh admitted: “I didn’t like them.” Traffic reporter Sally then asked Romesh: “You don’t do a lot, do you? You hang back…”

Acknowledging that this was often the case during filming, Romesh replied: “I do. There’s a lot of shouting, and there’s some voices there that take charge. I’m happy to chill.”

However, he did take issue with the fact that his fellow contestants never seemed very bothered by his decision to “sacrifice” himself in order to help them out.

He exclaimed: “What I would say, if you watch back the episodes, there are two consecutive missions in which I am eliminated early because I sacrifice myself. The lack of concern from the other contestants is what I would describe as insulting!”

Trying to empathise with Romesh’s co-stars, Sally suggested: “But, I mean, I think that’s every man for himself isn’t it?”

Romesh hit back: “No, but if it had been someone else it would have been, ‘oh my God we can’t lose you!’ But it was me, they barely noticed, ‘where’s the shield?!’”

The Celebrity Traitors continues on Thursday 29th October from 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
