HYDERABAD: Senior BRS leader and former minister T. Harish Rao on Friday accused the Congress government of pushing Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) into a crisis by perpetrating a series of scams, corruption and political interference.

Addressing a meeting of SCCL workers in Bhupalpally, Harish Rao said “Singareni is a priceless asset for Telangana but the Congress government transformed the 137-year-old institution into a hub of corruption.” The company, which once had healthy fixed deposits and strong finances, is now in a debt trap. In just two-and-a-half years, the Congress government pushed the livelihoods of workers into risk, he said.

He said that the government introduced a ‘Site Visit Certificate’ system in Singareni to benefit select contractors, but such a system does not exist in Coal India, Western Coalfields. The first major beneficiary of the policy was a company linked to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s brother-in-law, which secured a contract at a significantly higher rate, he added.

He also said that the company’s coal stocks were being inflated to conceal discrepancies in inventory records. While official records reflected coal stock availability running into lakhs of tonnes, physical verification raised serious doubts about the existence of such quantities. Production and stock figures are being manipulated to cover up shortages, he said.
