Hyderabad: Attapur Police on Friday arrested Surya Kumar, popularly known as ‘Gold Man’, for allegedly duping people by promising to supply imported gold at cheaper rates. Surya allegedly claimed to be a close aide of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar to gain the victims’ trust.
He allegedly collected lakhs of rupees from customers, promising imported gold at lower prices. Victims alleged that despite waiting for months after payment, they did not receive the gold. When questioned about the delay, and asked for their money back, Surya reportedly threatened and intimidated them. Realising they had been cheated, several victims approached Attapur Police and lodged complaints.
Based on the complaints, the police registered a case and arrested Surya.
This is not Surya’s first run-in with the law. Known for flashy appearances at public events and on local TV Channels wearing over two kilograms of gold-coloured ornaments, he came under the Income Tax department’s scanner in March. Though he claimed his jewellery was worth over Rs 1.3 crore, he told I-T officials it was mostly imitation. Only Rs 3 lakh worth was real gold. Surya reportedly said he wore the imitation ornaments to project wealth and gain the confidence of people in real estate and cinema circles.
As per reports, Surya runs a wholesale chicken centre, works as a personal trainer at a gym in Attapur, and is also involved in land settlements.
