Hyderabad: Hyderabad police rescued four ‘Milk Quails’ that were kept in iron cages and used as decorative attractions during Dussehra celebrations. The birds were rescued during raids conducted in three locations following information provided by alert citizens.

City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said on Wednesday that the police had responded promptly to the information and rescued all four birds alive. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible, in coordination with the Forest Department.

According to Sajjanar, two partridges kept in cramped cages at a temple near Bapughat in Langar Houz were rescued and handed over to Forest Department officials at KBR Park.

Another partridge was rescued from a cage hung from a tree at Sri Chitragupta Swamy Temple in Chatrinaka, while a fourth was found caged near Balajinagar’s Balaji Temple in Mangalhat. Both birds were handed over to forest officials.

Sajjanar condemned the practice of keeping birds captive in the name of religious festivities, stating that such acts were inhumane and could encourage wildlife poaching.

“True bhakti means kindness to life, not enslavement of nature,” he said, urging citizens not to encourage practices that deprive birds and other animals of their freedom.

The commissioner appealed to citizens to report incidents of wildlife cruelty by calling the toll-free numbers 18004255364 and 9803338666, or by dialling 112.
