‘Have a great time’: Mitchell gives Day his orders

Hawks star Will Day makes his return in the VFL on Friday night and Sam Mitchell make it clear that the midfielder would return to the seniors as soon as he is cleared for it.

Day is coming back after shoulder surgery.

“I just want him to have fun,” Mitchell said.

“He’s good at footy and he’s going to come back into the AFL side as soon as the medical team thinks that is a good option for him.

“I just want him to have a great time playing the game he loves.”

Mitchell demands Devils reward Launceston fans

Hawks coach Sam Mitchell has thrown the challenge down to AFL newcomers, the Tasmania Devils to make sure they treat Launceston as well as his club have.

The Hawks are still fuming about being forced out of Launceston after the 2027 season so the Devils can have the full state to themselves.

Mitchell said the Hawks were receiving a lot of love from locals and they wanted to win tonight’s match for their Tassie fans.

“It’s been a bit emotional in the last 24 hours as you see so many of the local people that we run into and how disappointed they are about the decision,” Mitchell said.

Nicks flags review for flat Crows, fears Ah Chee could miss time

Crows coach Matthew Nicks has flagged his coaches will review why the team couldn’t score during the second and third quarters tonight.

Nicks admitted he was frustrated and trying to use the right language following a game that he believed his side should have won.

“We had some opportunities tonight in big moments, and you could say that the game should have been ours as we won the inside-50 count, we won the ground-ball battle – we won a lot of areas, but we didn’t win the game. Credit to them,” Nicks said.

“When you leave it that late … we will look at that. What is it that frees us up to finish so strongly, yet we look like we are locked up through that second and third quarter before we can break the game back open for ourselves.”

Nicks also revealed that Callum Ah Chee played out the match with a guard on his finger and “he couldn’t feel it” – which could result in the star utility missing some time.

“It made it tough to execute for him,” Nicks said.

Nicks expects Rankine to miss matches

Crows coach Matthew Nicks has little doubt he will be without superstar Izak Rankine for the immediate future following a calf injury during tonight’s match.

Nicks said the one saving grace for the Crows was they had a bye next week.

“That will take a game off it,” Nicks said.

“The fact that he wasn’t able to come back out means there’ll be something there on a scan.”

Watson recounts his concussion test

A playful Nick Watson has joked that he struggles to pass the concussion test at the best of times after almost being forced from the game at half-time.

Watson had a collision with an Adelaide player and took a bump to the head and then slammed his head against the ground, appearing to come up dazed.

But he passed the test during the main break and played out the game as the Hawks claimed a tight win.

“I’m fine. I bounced back to my feet,” Watson told Kayo Sports.

Watch: Weddle’s diving saves and why he ‘looked like a smurf’

UPDATED: It went under the radar a little bit, but Josh Weddle’s diving saves turned out to be match-winners as he turned three potential goals into behinds.

Weddle told Kayo Sports he didn’t think much in those moments, although he partially regretted his dive in the goal square which saw blue grass paint cover a large part of his jumper and skin.

“There was not much going through my head,” Weddle told Kayo Sports.

“I just had to get back and save a few goals. One of them ended up with me looking like a smurf – I’ll have to wash myself after this.”
