The Chase star Darragh Ennis has spoken candidly about presenter Bradley Walsh, sharing what the Million Pound Shot host is truly like off-camera, and one thing he won’t put up with

Chaser Darragh Ennis has provided some major insight into how presenter Bradley Walsh behaves on The Chase and how, despite being a relaxed and funny character, he is a consummate professional and “wouldn’t tolerate anybody being mean or nasty”. Bradley, 66, has fronted The Chase since its debut episode on ITV in 2009, and has established himself as a firm viewer favourite.

Subsequently, as the programme expanded, additional Chasers were brought into the fold. Among the most recent Chasers is the aforementioned Darragh, who initially featured as a contestant in 2017, before returning as ‘The Menace’ in 2020. He’s remained with the show and now enjoys his own devoted following.

Earlier this year, speaking on the Digg YouTube channel, Darragh was questioned about what Bradley, who presents a new Channel 4 programme Bradley Walsh’s Million Pound Shot this evening, is like behind-the-scenes. What followed was a passionate tribute to a comedian, who has also appeared on Doctor Who.

At one point, Darragh went into specific detail about the skill Bradley demonstrates on the quiz show. He said: “Reading those Final Chase questions is not easy. He has to read them at the exact same speed for both sides.

“He has to make very few mistakes, and he has to scan answers, because sometimes there’s four or five possible answers to a question, all in the fraction of a second and keep it going, and keep it going, and he makes almost no mistakes. He is a brilliant professional. He is not in any way a diva, he turns up on time. We don’t mess about. But we mess about a bit, we have fun.”

While Bradley is a professional, Darragh said there were some occasions where he’s to reign in his chattier side. He added: “Sometimes, especially if somebody comes on who knows somebody he knows, or if they are from somewhere he that he knows really well, he just gets carried away in the chat.

“And like, we’re kind of going, ‘Three shows to do today. Come on. Move this on’. He warms to the contestants and he’s genuinely on their side. He wants them to win. He does not want us to win. He wants us to lose every episode.”

Darragh continued: “He’s a lovely, lovely man. I’d love to give you dirt, I really would, but there isn’t any. There’s no dirt on Brad. He is a genuinely lovely guy.

“And the atmosphere on our show is very much, [he] wouldn’t tolerate anybody being mean or nasty, and that is led mainly from the producers, but Brad is very much on board with that. He doesn’t put up with any of that nonsense at all. He’s a lovely guy.”

Beyond this, though, he emphasised that what truly comes across is Bradley’s genuine passion for the programme. Darragh added: “He loves doing the show, but the other thing is we all look at him and he’s funny and everything. You should see how good he is at that job.”
