I’d boo too – Saints QB Tyler Shough admits New Orleans were outgunned by Atlanta

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough understood the reaction of the Superdome crowd to the 45-24 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons and said he would have booed the team too.

The Saints were second best all night to the rival Falcons on Monday Night Football and the home supporters let the players have it at half-time while the jeers were more muted at the end largely because the majority had walked out.

New Orleans, who slipped to 1-3 for the season, never got going and trailed 24-7 after two quarters.

“I’m disappointed. More than anything, you lose to the Falcons like that and especially on a Monday night game, it sucks,” said Shough, who completed 30 of 48 passes with one touchdown and no interceptions. “There’s nothing you can say, like, ‘Ah man, it doesn’t suck.’ It definitely does. But I do know as a team that we’re extremely close and we’re going to keep going and keep our eyes forward.

“We have really good leadership and our leadership on the team admits that we got to get better. We have to get better and watch the film and evaluate that. There’s no hiding that. But at the same time, it is a long season and there’s a lot of games yet to be played to where we can do that.”

We got ‘punched in the mouth’ – Saints’ Jordan

Defensive end Cameron Jordan conceded the Saints “have to be a better team” after the home mauling.

“Everybody gets punched in the mouth in this game. Any given Sunday. But it’s how you respond,” Jordan said. “So we lost this game. Trash ass birds, they beat us, it is what it is. We have to be able to respond. That’ll show you what type of team we are. We could go on for days … about what we could do better. Break down the film, head to next week, we have to be a better team. Or this is what we’ll get each and every week.”

While it was doom and gloom for the Saints, the Falcons continued their resurgence with their second blow-out win in two weeks.

After struggling in weeks one and two, the return of QB Michael Penix has breathed new life into the Atlanta offense.

After scoring just 16 points in their first two games with Cooper Rush under center, Penix has guided his team to a 35-14 win over the Green Bay Packers followed by Monday’s triumph in New Orleans.

Penix and Robinsons combine to sink Saints

Penix orchestrated an Atlanta offense that depended heavily on the running game with Bijan Robinson rushing for 145 yards and two touchdowns while Brian Robinson Jr managed 62 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s been phenomenal, man,” Brian Robinson Jr said of Penix. “It ain’t really much other words I can say about the way he’s been playing. I appreciate his attitude, how he came in and just took the field and he’s focused and he’s ready. He’s not letting nothing that he’s been through in his past get in the way of his goals and what he wants in the future.”
