HYDERABAD: The International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) have joined hands to develop cybersecurity research and train professionals to tackle emerging threats to India’s digital payments ecosystem.

The two institutions signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on October 24 to collaborate on research, innovation and capacity building. The partnership will be led by IIIT-H’s Cyber Manthan Centre, which works in cybersecurity, digital forensics and trusted infrastructure, under the leadership of institute director Prof. Sandeep K. Shukla.

NPCI managing director and CEO Dilip Asbe said the rapid growth of digital payments required continuous innovation, skilled professionals and preparedness to address evolving cyber threats.

“Our collaboration with IIIT Hyderabad brings together industry experience and academic expertise to advance cybersecurity research, develop practical solutions and build capabilities to tackle current and emerging risks,” Asbe said. He added that the partnership reinforced NPCI’s commitment to proactive risk management and stronger security standards across digital payments.

The agreement provides a framework for joint research and development to address cybersecurity challenges specific to digital transactions. It also covers specialised training, knowledge exchange, research engagement and industry-oriented learning.

Prof. Shukla said the collaboration would allow researchers to examine emerging technologies and their applications in securing digital payment systems.

“Equally important is the focus on capacity building, which will enable students, researchers and professionals to develop the specialised skills required to secure the next generation of digital payment systems,” he said.

The partnership aims to connect academic research with the practical security needs of the payments industry, while developing professionals equipped to address changing cyber risks.
