Chennai: More than 400 people underwent cancer screening at a camp organised by Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and Hyundai Motor India Foundation at Sriperumbudur near Chennai on Friday as part of their efforts to promote early detection of cancer.
The camp was part of the ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer’ initiative, under which more than 2,800 people were screened across Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Haryana during October to mark Pink October, the international breast cancer awareness month.
Of the total beneficiaries screened during the month, more than 1,700 were from Tamil Nadu, over 600 from Maharashtra and 500 from Haryana.
The initiative has so far conducted over 420 free cancer screening camps across the country, reaching more than 72,000 people. Over 3,600 individuals have been identified for follow-up consultations, while 20 confirmed cancer cases have been detected through the programme.
The initiative also supports HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer and aims to administer 5,000 doses. Around 1,000 vaccinations have been administered so far. Nearly 250 girl students received HPV vaccinations at MIMER Hospital in Talegaon-Maval, Pune.
Prof. S. Mahalingam of IIT-M said community-based screening and awareness could facilitate early diagnosis, improve treatment outcomes and reduce the cancer burden.
Hyundai Motor India Foundation Trustee Mukundan M.S. said the initiative aimed to make preventive healthcare more accessible and encourage early detection.
