Chennai: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) on Tuesday inaugurated a Rs.3.30-crore robotics laboratory aimed at developing and testing automation technologies for the construction and infrastructure sectors.
The state-of-the-art facility has been established with CSR support from Bechtel India Pvt Ltd, a global engineering, construction and project management company. The initiative is intended to bridge academic research and industry requirements by developing robotics solutions for real-world construction applications.
The lab will be led by IIT-M faculty members Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese. The collaboration also involves Bechtel India engineers and is expected to provide students and researchers with opportunities to work on industry-specific challenges.
Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT-M, said the partnership would help address industry-relevant challenges in construction robotics and automation and enable promising technologies to be tested and taken closer to deployment.
Raja Yeluri, Managing Director, Bechtel India, said the facility would provide students, faculty and industry engineers a shared space to convert construction challenges into automated solutions while developing the talent required by the sector.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Mahalingam, Prof. Asokan, Prof. Varghese, Yeluri and Ravi Tata, Robotics Manager, Bechtel India.
