Outspoken and wickedly funny, Ruby Wax spills on jungle life, the stars she’d love to interview and the campmate she developed a ‘deep’ relationship with

Ruby Wax was one of the stand-out stars of last year’s I’m A Celeb, even if she did ruffle plenty of feathers along the way. One thing everyone could agree on, the 73-year-old American was never anything but pure TV gold.

Wax made some firm friends on the gruelling reality show – and when the Mirror caught up with her at the British LGBT Awards in London on Thursday night, which she was proudly co-hosting, she opened up on one of the amazing pals she made around the campfire.

The comedian-turned-mental health campaigner also told us about some of the A-listers she would love to interrogate if she ever saw the return of her iconic chat show, Ruby Wax Meets… and reveals her secret to getting some of the world’s biggest names to ‘be human’…

Ruby, how does it feel to be hosting this amazing event?

LGBTQ are my favourites and that’s how I got well known, so I’m paying back.

You took part in I’m a Celebrity and the nation fell in love with you all over again. Have you noticed that out and about?

Well, without make-up I don’t look like this so people ignore me – and then I put on make-up and people say that they love Tom [Reid Wilson].

What do they want to know about Tom?

If we really had a relationship and we did. It was deep and meaningful. Tom’s smart and he knows how to play the game.

What would your advice be to celebrities wanting to do the show in the future?

It’ll never be as fun as what I had, it’ll never be that good because they picked people that would be adorable with each other. They weren’t looking for victims, and I think they may go back to that, or maybe they’ll find a group like mine. But we loved each other.

Are you all still in touch?

Well, I’m seeing Tom on Sunday and if I go up North, I see them… but otherwise, we will meet.

Your celebrity interviews were iconic, would you love to bring a show like that back? Or to do a chat show?

Yeah, I’d do a chat show – but I got them for a week, so you’d never get that again. I would miss it.

Who would be your dream celebrity guest?

Carrie Fisher, if I could bring her back, that would be my dream. Princess Leia. And I’d like to figure out Tom Cruise, I’d go slowly. I’d really try to unravel his life, because nobody got to the centre of it. But now famous? Who would I want to do? What’s his name? He’s so pretty. He was Willy Wonka.

Yeah, Timothee Chalamet. The thing is, I don’t prepare anything, I know everything about them, but then I see the whites of their eyes and then I just go. So I never prepare, that’s how I got them to be human.
