Hyderabad: After over a decade-long wait, IMAX is finally making its way back to Hyderabad, much to the delight of movie lovers in the city. The return of the premium large-format cinema experience was recently confirmed by Sunil Narang, producer, exhibitor, and Managing Director of Asian Cinemas, who revealed that an IMAX screen is currently being developed at one of the company’s properties. An official announcement is expected soon.
The development marks the comeback of IMAX in Hyderabad after a 12-year gap. The city was once home to the iconic Prasad’s IMAX, which opened in 2003 and was widely regarded as one of India’s most prominent IMAX screens. However, the original IMAX format was discontinued in 2014, leaving Hyderabad without a true IMAX screen despite being one of the country’s largest film markets.
While the exact location of the new IMAX screen has not yet been officially announced, reports suggest that Asian Cinemas is planning to transform the historic Sudarshan 70MM theatre into an official IMAX venue. Industry buzz also indicates that actors Rana Daggubati, Venkatesh, and Mahesh Babu could be associated with the project as partners.
The news has generated considerable excitement among cinephiles, many of whom have been advocating for IMAX’s return for years. Known for its massive screens, advanced projection systems, and immersive sound technology, IMAX offers a premium movie-watching experience that sets it apart from conventional cinema formats.
The return of IMAX is expected to further strengthen Hyderabad’s position as a major cinema destination and provide audiences with a state-of-the-art cinematic experience once again.
