Greg Davies played sadistic Mr Gilbert in The Inbetweeners and its two spin-off films, the first of which in 2011 grossed $88 million (£65 million) and the second (2014) $64 million (£47 million)

The Inbetweeners star Greg Davies has playfully threatened “consequences for several individuals” if he isn’t in the third spin-off film thought to be in production.

The creators of the teenage sitcom are understood to have struck a multimillion-pound deal to make another movie, more than 10 years after the second flick grossed $64 million (£47 million). Davies played sadistic headteacher Mr Gilbert in that, the first film and the three series of the sitcom, which was twice nominated for Best Situation Comedy at BAFTA.

Speaking in an interview this week, the 57-year-old actor and comedian said: “God, I hope they do [make a third film].” He jokingly added: “I’d be so excited. If I’m not in it there’ll be consequences for several individuals.”

Three of the main cast; Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, and Blake Harrison, are all in their 40s now. However, it is believed they and James Buckley would still reprise their roles as the pals in their late teens or early 20s in the third film, said to be in the works for Netflix. Mr Gilbert was their head of sixth form in the series and by the conclusion of the second movie his character was in a relationship with Will McKenzie’s mother.

Speaking to The Times, Davies added: “I would find it very hard to believe that we’re not going to see fairly similar characters… All three series and both films, honestly, it can’t have been more than three weeks’ work for me but people still shout, ‘Gilbert!’ at me in the street on a near daily basis.”

Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, the creators of The Inbetweeners which aired on Channel 4, reached a deal with Netflix last month, it is understood. They reportedly intend to also retain Emily Atack, who played Charlotte Hinchcliffe, and the lads’ parents, including Belinda Stewart-Wilson — Will’s saucy mum Polly.

Davies’ time as Mr Gilbert was boosted by his previous post as a teacher himself. Davies, who was born in St Asaph, north Wales, taught drama for 13 years before his comedy career. His former pupils have provided him with dynamite material, such as the boy nicknamed Bagdad “because over the holidays his dad had bought him a new bag”.

But when Thomas, who played Simon Cooper in The Inbetweeners, was asked about circles of the third film, he expressed concerns he and his pals are now in different stages of their lives. The father of one, from Chelmsford, Essex, had said: “Wisdom does not make a very good narrative. The Inbetweeners is full of characters who are delusional.”
