New Delhi: An Indian-origin doctor in Toledo, Ohio, has been sentenced to six months in jail for secretly recording people by placing a hidden camera in a staff restroom at a hospital in the United States.
The accused, Advait Deshmukh, was also sentenced to three years of probation. The terms of his sentence require him to remain under community control, register as a sex offender for 15 years, attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings, and continue undergoing sex offender and mental health treatment, among other conditions.
The case came to light in June 2025, when a hospital employee discovered a hidden cellphone inside a unisex restroom at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Ohio, triggering an investigation.
According to a WTOL 11 report, a witness attempted to remove the hidden cellphone from the restroom. However, Deshmukh allegedly took the device back, claiming it belonged to him.
A subsequent joint investigation by the Toledo Police and ProMedica uncovered more than 80 images stored on the phone, which were allegedly recorded between February and May 2025.
Investigators identified six victims, none of whom had consented to being recorded. Police believe there may be additional victims, as evidence suggests similar recordings could date back to 2018.
At the time the offences were uncovered, Deshmukh was a third-year medical resident at the University of Toledo, specialising in endourology and urologic oncology. Following the discovery of the device, the university placed him on administrative leave and, after an internal investigation, decided not to renew his residency appointment.
Before sentencing, Deshmukh reportedly apologised to the victims. His lawyer urged the court to impose probation instead of a jail sentence, arguing that the former physician had been undergoing therapy to better understand and address the behaviour that led to the offences.
