Indian photographer Manush Kalwari has achieved remarkable recognition by securing third place in the Portrait category at the 2024 iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) for his evocative image titled “The Gaddi Boy and His Goat.” Captured in Burwa, Himachal Pradesh, this poignant photograph was taken using the budget-friendly iPhone SE, underscoring the notion that exceptional photography does not always require high-end equipment.
The 2024 competition featured entries from photographers across 140 countries, highlighting the global nature of mobile photography. The first prize in the Portrait category went to German photographer Artem Koleganov for his image “Grace,” taken with an iPhone X in St. Petersburg, while Chinese photographer Enhua Ni claimed second place with “Pilgrim,” shot on an iPhone X in Varanasi, India.
Kalwari’s achievement is particularly noteworthy given that the IPPAWARDS celebrate images that are unpublished and edited only with iOS apps, emphasizing the skill and creativity of the photographers. His award-winning image not only captures the traditional lifestyle of the Gaddi community but also demonstrates that storytelling through photography can transcend the limitations of technology. Kalwari received a Platinum Bar from a prestigious private gold mint as part of his recognition.
The IPPAWARDS, now in its 17th year, continue to honor the art of mobile photography, showcasing the talent and creativity of photographers worldwide. Kalwari’s success serves as an inspiration, proving that with vision and technique, even the most modest devices can yield award-winning results.
