New Delhi: Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Mr Sarbananda Sonowal said on Saturday that all six Indian nationals, along with the entire 25-member crew of the Marshall Islands-flagged LNG carrier M/T AL MAYEDA are safe. He added that India is continuously monitoring the situation and is in close contact with the ship management company to ensure the ongoing security and well-being of its seafarers.

LNG carrier M/T AL MAYEDA was targeted on Friday in a projectile attack in the Persian Gulf. Besides, on October 29, Liberia-flagged VLCC MT ARZANAH, carrying two Indian nationals, and on October 30, Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MT LOUISE 1, carrying 27 Indian seafarers, were targeted in projectile attacks in the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian government said all 29 Indian seafarers across both vessels are completely safe with no injuries.

However, one Indian seafarer died on September 23 when an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged bulk carrier M.V. CAPE DAO was hit by a missile near Oman while sailing from Mina Saqr to India. The vessel had 28 crew members, including 20 Indians.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Mr Randhir Jaiswal said that so far India lost 22 of its nationals in the West Asia conflict, which includes 14 seafarers. “We remain in close touch with our community in West Asia so that we can do our best for their safety and well-being.”
