India’s First Sunrise Happens in This Tiny Village at the Edge of Three Countries

While most travellers head to popular hill stations when the summer heat sets in, the northeast holds some of the country’s earliest and most extraordinary sunrises.

India spans nearly 30 degrees of longitude — by the time its first light reaches Mumbai or Delhi, it has already spent close to two hours illuminating this eastern corridor of hills, ridges, and river valleys.

The monsoon will close this window by the end of June. Until then, the skies are clear and the dawns are at their most vivid. Here are five places where India’s day begins.

Dong Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

At the far end of the northeast, in the Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, lies the most extraordinary sunrise destination in the country. Dong sits on the left bank of the Lohit River near the tripoint where India, China, and Myanmar converge — and it is the first inhabited place in India to receive sunlight each morning.

From Walong, the nearest town, visitors trek 8 to 10 kilometres to the village and its sunrise viewpoints. The climb begins at 3 am, up a steep pine-forested ridge in complete darkness. In peak summer, sunrise arrives as early as 4 am.

What waits at the top is a panorama of three countries: mountains folding into mountains, the Lohit glinting far below, and a sky that opens before anywhere else on Indian soil. An Inner Line Permit is required for Arunachal Pradesh.

Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh translates as the “land of the dawn-lit mountains,” and nowhere does that name feel more earned than Tawang.

At the Tawang viewpoint, monks begin chants before dawn, prayer flags flutter in the cold breeze, and watching the sun emerge feels ceremonial. Light moves gradually across layers of land — mountains, pine forests, and rivers cutting through rock far below.

Tawang sits at 3,048 metres. On clear mornings, the snow-covered peaks of Kangto and Gorichen become visible as the sky brightens.

The town is best visited between March and June, when the Sela Pass is reliably open. The nearest airport is Guwahati, roughly 12 hours by road.

Japfu Peak, Nagaland

South of Kohima, the second-highest peak in Nagaland offers one of the most expansive sunrises in the entire northeast. From the summit, a vast spread of valleys, hills, and villages unfolds below — on a clear morning, almost half of Nagaland is visible, along with parts of Arunachal Pradesh and as far as Dibrugarh in Assam.

The trek begins from Kigwema village, about 16 kilometres from Kohima, with a 2 am start required to catch sunrise at the peak. The trail passes through dense rhododendron forest before opening onto a ridge with unobstructed views. Sunrise here occurs at around 5 am. An Inner Line Permit is required for Nagaland.

Nongjrong, Meghalaya

About 49 kilometres from Shillong, the Khasi village of Nongjrong has become one of the most spectacular sunrise destinations in the northeast — and almost nobody outside the region knows it.

What makes it unusual is the vantage point: visitors watch the sunrise from above, looking down at a valley still wrapped in darkness while the sky overhead turns gold.

Travellers typically leave Shillong at around 3 am. March to May offers stunning views, though the best months for near-guaranteed clear skies are October through February.

Laitlum Canyon, Meghalaya

Laitlum means “end of the hills” in Khasi, and standing at the canyon’s edge in the early morning, the name makes complete sense.

Located about 35 kilometres from Shillong, it is more accessible than Nongjrong but no less dramatic — the valley drops sharply on both sides into a vast, mist-filled expanse, with dawn light flooding the canyon floor while the ridges above are still in shadow. Aim to arrive before 5:30 am.

The window is short. By mid-June, Meghalaya disappears into rain and the roads into Anjaw and Tawang become unreliable. April to June are the northeast’s final weeks of clear skies — the last chance, before the monsoon arrives, to stand somewhere that the rest of India won’t see for another hour or two.
