New Delhi: India on Friday reiterated that the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) of 1960 will remain in abeyance until Pakistan ends its support for cross-border terrorism.
At a weekly briefing, ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the treaty would remain suspended “until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism”.
India has kept the treaty in abeyance since last year following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Centre has maintained that Islamabad has not shown any commitment to ending its support for terrorism.
The statement came amid reports that Pakistan defence minister Khawaja Asif warned of possible escalation over the suspension of the treaty, even as concerns of a water crisis persist in that country.
Officials said there are currently no formal talks between the two countries. India has consistently maintained that “talks and terror cannot go together”.
Following the Pahalgam attack, India had carried out Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan.
Diplomatic ties between the two countries have remained strained since 2019, when Pakistan downgraded relations after India revoked Article 370.
