Injury-hit Warrington Wolves moved level on points with Super League table toppers Leeds Rhinos after eking out a narrow 18-16 victory over Catalans Dragons.

Sam Burgess’ side, who lost Arron Lindop, Josh Thewlis and Jordan Crowther during the contest, overturned a 10-6 half-time deficit to return to winning ways following last week’s emphatic 34-6 loss to Rhinos, who they now match on 24 points.

Matty Ashton collected a Ben Currie pass to give the Wolves a 15th-minute lead at Halliwell Jones Stadium, with Ewan Irwin adding the extras.

Zac Lipowicz crossed at the other end and Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet converted as the Dragons quickly levelled before Lewis Dodd set up Nick Cotric to put the mid-table visitors in front.

Albert Hopoate powered over seven minutes into the second period, with the second of Irwin’s three successful conversions restoring the home side’s lead.

Warrington stretched their advantage when James Bentley went over in the corner before Aispuro-Bichet converted off the post to set up a tense finish after a try from Lewis Dodd.

Stand-in full-back Irwin produced a crucial, try-saving tackle to prevent Aispuro-Bichet snatching victory in the closing stages.

Dragons captain Benjamin Garcia was then sin-binned for dissent as the away side missed a major opportunity to boost their play-off hopes, with Catalans eighth in the table on 16 points from as many matches.
