The Mirror is on the ground at the Cannes Film Festival – and here’s the inside scoop on the acclaimed films on everyone’s lips on the French Riviera right now
The world of cinema descends on this corner of the French Riviera round about now, with hordes of films in competition – but here’s our top five…
The Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, with A-listers in their finest seeing and being seen – and there are a few films causing a serious buzz among fans and critics alike at the world-famous annual film festival on the French Riviera.
From films shining a spotlight on home-grown French talent to some serious Hollywood A-lister casts, these are the flicks getting everyone excited at the famous French event for cinephiles from across the globe…
PAPER TIGER
Starring Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson, this highly-anticipated crime drama directed by James Gray is set in 80s New York, and follows married couple Hester and Irwin Pearl (Johansson and Teller) whose lives are upturned entirely, when Irwin and his brother (Driver) get tangled up in a perilous scheme – involving the Russian mafia.
A watch-it-behind-your-hands tale of what happens when people make one bad decision after another as their normal lives slowly turn into a nightmare, this gritty outing will have viewers on the edge of their seats. It’s also the first time Driver and Johanssen reunite on screen since taut relationship drama, Marriage Story – and their chemistry then was sensational.
HOPE
Irish A-lister Michael Fassbender is in town with his wife, Danish actress Alicia Vikander – who he tied the knot with in 2017 in Ibiza. And the pair are causing quite a stir. Not only for bringing a serious slice of Hollywood presence to a heavily-French-led edition of Cannes, but as Hope is the hotly-anticipated follow-up from acclaimed South Korean director Na Hong-Jin, after his 2016 box office smash hit The Wailing.
An ambitious sci-fi thriller – which we know Prometheus star Fassbender is no stranger to – set in the remote village Hope Harbor, near the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ], when a tiger is thought to have appeared and local police chief Bum-seok is alerted, it lurches the community into a state of chaos. But there’s a more horrifying mystery to come. If you like your frights futuristic, you should be very excited about this one.
FJORD
Starring Marvels actor Sebastian Stan – whose partner Annabelle Wallis is expecting their first child after 4 years together, this Cristian Mungui-directed drama is competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. No walk in the park, It follows the trials and tribulations of the Gheorghius family, a devout Romanian-Norwegian couple, who set up home in a village at the end of a fjord where they quickly befriend their neighbors, the Halbergs.
The children of both families form a close bond – but when school staff discovers bruises on the body of Elia, the eldest of the Gheorghiu children, the community wonders if the traditional education the Gheorghiu children receive from their parents could be behind it. Reuniting Stan and Reinaven, who were stunning in 2024 American dark comedy thriller, A Different Man, we have high hopes…
TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA
We’re sold on the title alone, to be honest. Starring Sex Education’s Gillian Anderson – who premiered a bouncy new ‘do’ on the Cannes red carpet, alongside Hannah Einbinder, this satirical romantic slasher flick (no, really), directed by Jane Schoenberg sees Anderson shine in the role of the perfect vampy horror queen.
After several botched sequels and despite a dwindling fanbase, an enthusiastic young director takes the reins of the Camp Miasma slasher franchise, but when she visits the star of the first film, a reclusive and enigmatic actress, the two women find themselves caught up in a hallucinogenic, bloody world of fear and desire,
PARALLEL STORIES
Starring two homegrown names, Vincent Cassel and Isabelle Hupert, this quirky offering by director Asghar Farhadi follows the adventures of writer Sylvie. Trying to find some inspiration for her next book, she takes to spying on her neighbours across the road, And when she takes on the help of a young man called Adam for daily tasks, she doesn’t realise that her world is set to be turned upside – in ways that her author’s brain could never have imagined.
Interestingly, acclaimed French star Cassel, of La Haine fame, is pulling a double whammy as he’s in town to film the new season of The White Lotus, alongside new cast members Ben Kingsley and Max Mingella – playing one of the locals (rumoured to be a tour guide, though it’s all top secret) alongside a group of wealthy employees and holiday-makers staying at the ultra-luxury Château de La Messardière in Saint-Tropez. Our eyes, as they say, are peeled…
