It’s an increasingly familiar feeling. You open Instagram in the morning and see a sculptural gown with three-dimensional waves of fabric unfurling off the body, almost suspended in motion. It seems futuristic, even a little fantastical, but you know exactly what you’re looking at. The headline reads: [insert celebrity name] in Gaurav Gupta at [insert event name]. From Shakira to Serena Williams, the roster keeps on growing.
The designer may have become a mainstay on international red carpets and the Paris Couture Week calendar, but on April 17, he brought that vision back home. Gupta presented a mix of his eveningwear collection, couture and menswear in Hyderabad, with a focus on what Harrods, the London-based luxury department store, has been buying. “Most of this is a Harrods edit, what we’re showing,” he shares. “They sell our evening gowns, dresses and even our beaded gowns to their global customers really well. So we’ve put that together and taken some of our Paris Couture pieces, which also had buyers there, into this mix. It just felt like the right moment.”

Ahead of the showcase, Vogue India caught up with the designer to talk about creative challenges, calculated risks, and why authenticity is important.
Vogue India: Do you ever feel like you need to hold yourself back when you’re doing evening wear, which tends to be more pared back?
Gaurav Gupta: Maximalism does come to me more naturally, but I enjoy it. I like the challenge of making something that more people can wear, while still retaining the GG magic.
Vogue India: Are there other challenges you face in your design process?
