Family and famous connections
Born in Hammersmith in 1972, Victoria Coren Mitchell was raised in a family with strong ties to journalism and comedy. She spent her childhood in Cricklewood, north London, alongside her brother, journalist and The Times restaurant critic Giles Coren.
Her father, Alan Coren, was a celebrated writer, satirist and broadcaster, best known for his regular appearances on the BBC Radio 4 panel show The News Quiz. He was also a regular team captain on BBC television’s Call My Bluff.
Alan was the editor of Punch for almost a decade; later, he edited The Listener magazine. Sadly, Alan died in 2007. Victoria’s mother, Anne Kasriel, also played a key role in the family’s upbringing.
Marriage
Victoria Coren Mitchell has often spoken about the moment she realised her future husband, comedian David Mitchell, was the one.
The Only Connect host has been with the Peep Show star for well over a decade. Although their romance didn’t begin straight away, Victoria has revealed she had a strong feeling from the moment they met that their lives would eventually be intertwined.
Their first encounter came in 2007 at a film premiere, where fellow comedian David Baddiel decided to play cupid. Introducing the pair, he confidently told Victoria: “There’s David Mitchell over there, I think you should probably marry him. I’ll get the ball rolling by introducing you.”
Victoria initially dismissed the suggestion, but her opinion quickly changed. Recalling the evening, she said: “I thought that was ridiculous but, a couple of hours later, I thought I would probably marry him.”
Despite the instant connection, romance didn’t blossom overnight. It would be another three years before the pair finally went on their first date. Victoria has previously explained that the timing wasn’t right when they first met. She was still grieving the loss of her father at the time.
Victoria also previously confessed that she had almost dated politician Ed Miliband. She told the BBC: “Someone once tried to set me up with Ed Miliband. We were seated next to each other at a wedding. He’s actually a very nice chap, it didn’t work out.
“He was gallant enough that ages later we were on a political chat show together, and he claimed: ‘Oh, I had no idea it was meant to be a fix up.'”
Baby news
Fans were caught off guard in 2023 when Victoria revealed she and husband David Mitchell had become parents again. The duo welcomed their first child, Barbara, in 2015.
However, the couple had kept the birth of their second daughter, June Violet, completely private until Victoria, then 51, shared the news in a characteristically witty social media post.
She joked at the time: “Many people are assuming my tweet yesterday was a Halloween costume. Not at all; last week I had a baby, and nothing currently fits me except cloaks.” She went on to reassure viewers that her work schedule hadn’t been affected, adding: “Luckily, Only Connect is a pre-record. Happy All Saints Day!”
Victoria and David have continued to keep both of their daughters out of the public spotlight since June’s arrival. However, she has occasionally spoken about family life during interviews.
Chatting to Radio Times, Victoria said their eldest daughter, Barbara, has developed a love of The Masked Singer and classic episodes of Poirot, joking that she takes after her mother.
Meanwhile, June, who was 18 months old at the time of the interview, wasn’t yet spending time in front of the television. Victoria explained that although her youngest enjoys Bluey, she doesn’t realise it’s a TV programme, instead treating it simply as “a source of really great plastic dog Weebles.”
