Instant reactions to Florida’s disappointing Week 10 home loss to OU

Florida football failed to prevail against its SEC opponent for the fourth time this season, losing to the Oklahoma Sooners, 23-7, in the Swamp on Saturday. The Gators are still one win away from clinching a bowl berth with three games remaining on the 2026 schedule.

The offense looked lethargic for most of the night while the defense often struggled to contain John Mateer and Co. Florida did make a few strong stops in the second half, but the corps’ inability to make tackles allowed Oklahoma to put together lengthy drives that further prevented the Gators from putting points on the board.

GOOD: There were not many positives to take away from this tough loss. The Gators did keep their penalties to a minimum — save for a couple that will be mentioned below — and kept Jones Jr. mostly well protected, but after that, the silver linings run thin.

BAD: Florida’s inability to bring Mateer down in the backfield was a significant reason why the Gators lost this one. Too many times, Oklahoma’s QB felt heavy pressure, only to avoid tackles and slip away for positive yardage, often in key situations.

Whether it was with his feet or arm, Mateer found ways to punish his opponent — he was given too many opportunities by Florida’s defense to make plays and he capitalized on them.

UGLY: Two straight holding calls by Caden Jones in the first quarter were critical mistakes that stifled Florida’s second drive of the evening. While those flags came too early to call them game-changers, they helped set the tone for offensive futility.

GOOD: Bailey Stockton gave Florida a spark when the offense desperately needed one. His 31-yard punt return set the Gators up near midfield before their lone touchdown drive. Florida had punted on its first three possessions, and Stockton’s return helped shorten the field enough for the running game to finally break through.

BAD: Florida wasted the stretch when its defense gave it every opportunity to take control. The Gators forced punts on Oklahoma’s first three second-half possessions but scored nothing in response. A six-point deficit remained manageable throughout the third quarter, yet Florida repeatedly handed the ball back.

The defense bought time for a comeback that the offense never delivered.

UGLY: Oklahoma’s marathon touchdown drive exposed Florida’s inability to finish a defensive possession. The Sooners converted all five third downs they faced in the fourth quarter, consuming 12:45 across the quarter break before extending their lead to 20-7.

Florida had chances to get off the field in short-yardage situations and on third-and-7. It stopped none of them, allowing Oklahoma to drain both the clock and the Gators’ remaining margin for error.

GOOD: Duke Clark returned from injury after a two-game absence and provided a nice spark, recording 61 yards of total offense, which was the most of all the skill players for Florida.

BAD: The Gators had a chance to cut the deficit to just three points in the third quarter but chose to gamble on fourth down. The aggressive decision ultimately backfired, as pressure on quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. forced an errant throw that resulted in an interception in the red zone.

UGLY: Despite showing promise in the running game, Florida’s offense struggled to find its rhythm throughout the first half. The Gators failed to establish a consistent passing attack, with Dallas Wilson and Bailey Stockton serving as the only receivers to record a catch.

Florida tallied just 109 yards of total offense in the first half, nearly half of Oklahoma’s offensive production. The offense’s early struggles can be attributed to mental mistakes that stalled a couple of promising drives.
