Khammam: A notorious inter-state burglary gang involved in a string of thefts across the Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh was busted by the Telangana Police in Khammam district on Tuesday. Four gang members were arrested, while police launched a manhunt for the remaining accused.

According to Vasundhara Yadav, ACP of Kalluru Sub Division, the arrested were identified as Manikala Vasantha Rao (39), Manikala Ramesh (33), Ponnuri Koteswara Rao (24) and Thummala Sekhar (25). Police seized two motorcycles used in the crimes. Based on credible information, VM Banjar police apprehended the accused from a farm on the outskirts of Lankapalli village in Penuballi mandal in the district.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in at least seven burglary cases registered in Khammam and Eluru districts and allegedly stole gold, silver, other valuables and cash worth around Rs 16 Lakh.
Police said the gang targeted locked houses and temples and was involved in burglaries at Chinnampeta in Eluru district, Duddepudi, Kandukuru, Lankapalli and Adavimallela villages in Khammam district, besides a temple hundi theft in Sathupalli.
It was also revealed that several of the accused are history-sheeters and have previously served jail terms in theft cases. Despite repeated arrests, they allegedly continued committing burglaries in the Telugu states. Given the gang’s repeated involvement in coordinated thefts, police have invoked Section 111 (Organised Crime) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and initiated proceedings under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act. The accused have been remanded to judicial custody, while efforts are underway to trace the other gang member identified as Ponnuri Rambabu.
