The first trailer of Alia Bhatt’s Alpha was unveiled by Yash Raj Films, but the controversy over her Cannes appearance in May continues to cast a shadow over the actor, and consequently, over the upcoming film.
Questions are being raised about how Alia is playing a teenager in the film, as well as her suitability to play a spy. That apart, stories have been doing the rounds that the film is heading for the OTT as there are no takers for a theatre release, as well as reports of a fallout between Alia and Bobby Deol, though Bobby himself has denied these rumours.
“It is like a mob chorus. No one is asking you to love every film and support every actor, but does it not seem orchestrated?” asks a well-informed source. “If Salman, Shah Rukh and Akshay can play men half their age, what’s wrong with a 33-year-old woman playing an 18-year-old? Is this not a win? Also, this is the first action-driven female film. If it doesn’t work, maybe we can do better.” Admitting that films are not doing well, the source adds, “The mood is sombre, we don’t need hate from our own.”
The film, which faced several delays due to VFX and post-production, releases on July 3. It boasts of a star-studded cast, including a cameo by Hrithik Roshan.
