With the Duchess of Sussex being caught in the fallout from serious allegations against her father Thomas Markle, the Mirror’s Pod Save the King royal YouTube show has delved into what Meghan’s plight could mean for a reunion with the Firm
The Royal Family could be feeling sympathetic towards Meghan Markle in light of the serious allegations against her father, according to the Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers.
The Duchess of Sussex has found herself caught in the fallout from the allegations against her father, as he is being investigated by Filipino authorities over allegations he was in possession of child sexual abuse material following a report from his son, Thomas Markle Jr. Mr Markle Sr denies all allegations against him.
Following the news of the investigation, Meghan said she was ‘deeply distressed’ by the accusations, and added that she learned of “disturbing allegations” against her father in 2018 just weeks after marrying Prince Harry.

As the investigation into Meghan’s father continues, Russell questioned on the Mirror’s Pod Save The King YouTube show if the difficult situation the Duchess has been placed in could garner sympathy from the senior members of the Firm.
Russell asked: “One of the big points I was thinking about is: could this be the chance for renewed reconciliation between Meghan and the rest of the Royal Family?”
The Mirror’s deputy royal editor Jennifer Newton countered that while the royals could be feeling for Meghan during the difficult time, it may not be enough to erase years of hurt from the Sussexes.
Jennifer said: “I think it would be really hard to think that none of them don’t have any sympathy for her in this situation, but I suppose the big question is: can they separate this issue from the issue of what Harry and Meghan have done over the years by trashing the family?
“Can they set that aside enough and have this sympathy for Meghan to think this is the thing that is going to be the catalyst for a reconciliation? And I think that would be quite a big, and probably difficult, decision for the likes of the King, Prince William, and Princess of Wales to be able to make.”
Russell added: “You would imagine that the King has reached out not only to his son, but potentially to Meghan to offer not necessarily his support or condolences, but certainly some sympathies with her, because it can’t be nice being in the the the very centre of this media storm where there are very, very fast-moving parts to this story.”
In the days after the allegations against Thomas Markle Snr came to light, Meghan issued a statement in which she said she was ‘deeply distressed’ by the accusations, and her thoughts were ‘with any children who may have been harmed’.
Authorities in the UK said it had passed a letter, which contained ‘a number of claims’ about Markle Sr’s alleged ‘offending outside the United Kingdom’ to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2019. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also said it was aware of the allegations against Mr Markle Sr.
The Mirror understands Meghan received the letter – which is understood to have been penned by Mr Markle Sr’s ex-wife Roslyn Loveless, who has since died – from Scotland Yard January 2019, months after the royal wedding, which took place in May 2018.
In a statement issued earlier this week, the Duchess of Sussex said: “I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.
“In 2018, a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection. That letter was subsequently shared with me. It made troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated.”
She continued: “I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them. I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families.
“Although the breadth of [the allegations] is more sickening than one could ever imagine, my sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children.”
