‘It’s B.S.’ – Darnold refuses to sugarcoat performance after turnovers doom Seahawks to defeat in Denver

Sam Darnold described his second-half interceptions as “B.S.” after they doomed the Seattle Seahawks to a second successive defeat with a 17-14 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.

The Seahawks trailed 14-3 in fourth quarter before Darnold led an 11-play drive that trimmed the deficit to 14-11, only to then spurn a chance to tie with his first interception with 91 seconds left in the game.

He made amends by leading a field-goal drive to force overtime after Denver subsequently went three-and-out in just 28 seconds, Jason Myers’ 34-yard kick sending the game to an extra period.

Seattle got the ball to start overtime, but Darnold was picked off by Ja’Quan McMillian to set Denver up in Seahawks territory, allowing Will Lutz to kick a game-winning 53-yard field goal.

The Broncos improved to 4-2 while the Seahawks dropped to 3-3. Seattle could end Week 6 three games behind the San Francisco 49ers (5-0) in the NFC West. The 49ers host the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.

Darnold, who also threw two picks in a loss to the 49ers last week, now has seven interceptions on the year having thrown 14 as the Seahawks won their second Super Bowl title last season.

And Darnold was scathing in his assessment of his mistakes.

“No way to sugarcoat it,” Darnold said. “That one sucked. Can’t turn the ball over. That’s obviously at the forefront of my mind, but there’s just a lot that we can do better.

“I just think it’s B.S for me to keep turning the ball over. It’s not fair to our defense, it’s not fair to our special teams group, not fair really to the entire team. So I’ve got to be better that way.

“Dropping back and taking what they [the Denver defense] give me, I felt like I did a pretty good job of that in the first half.

“And then late in the second half, those two plays, just can’t have it.”

Denver prevailed despite another underwhelming showing from Broncos quarterback Bo Nix.

Nix threw for 107 yards on 27 attempts, averaging under four yards per pass, with the downfield element of Denver’s passing game still conspicuous by its absence.

Even amid the win, Nix conceded to dissatisfaction with the performance of the passing attack.

“I don’t know why we can’t really push the ball vertically right now,” Nix said. “But defenses are just sitting back and hanging out. … Hopefully we find a way to get more out of it.”

“We’re definitely capable, we’ve shown it. And, you know I don’t know where the disconnect is right now, to be honest with you.

“I just think we’re really, for some reason, struggling to find those explosive plays, and that’s what makes an offense really spectacular: Is finding explosive plays. And right now, we don’t have those.”

The Broncos will hope a matchup with a porous Arizona Cardinals defense helps them find their explosive plays in Week 7, when the Seahawks face a daunting matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
