The Rangers were expected to be one of this year’s trade deadline sellers, but one piece might not be on the move after all.
Right-hander Jacob deGrom was asked to waive his no-trade clause but declined, The Athletic reported Monday. DeGrom said he wanted to stay put in Texas, according to the outlet.
The Post’s Jon Heyman reported the Braves were among the teams to check in on deGrom, though it was not clear what their chances were had deGrom allowed for a deal to go through.
It’s not clear if deGrom would revoke his no-trade clause if another deal was in the works.
The Rangers already made one trade before the 6 p.m. deadline, sending infielder Josh Smith to the Blue Jays for left-handed pitcher Adam Macko, per multiple reports.
Even at 38 and seven years after his second Cy Young Award win, deGrom has still been an effective pitcher for the Rangers this season. He has a 3.96 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 135 strikeouts over 113 2/3 innings.
It comes off a campaign in which he was named an American League All-Star and struck out 185 hitters over 30 starts.
The ex-Mets ace is owed $37 million in 2027 and has a $20 million club option for 2028.
The Rangers are also expected to approach shortstop Corey Seager and righty Nathan Eovaldi about potential trades, The Athletic reported. Seager has a partial no-trade clause, while Eovaldi has a full no-trade clause.
This deadline has already been an active one with pitchers getting moved, as Tarik Skubal (Dodgers), Freddy Peralta (Rays) and Kevin Gausman (Cubs) have all been dealt to new clubs.
