VIJAYAWADA: YSRC president and former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the arrest and detention of party MLC and general secretary Lella Appireddy, alleging that he had been implicated in false cases.

In a post on X on Saturday, Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that the police were making arbitrary arrests and detaining party workers and others who had peacefully protested against electoral irregularities. He described the action as an abuse of power and compared it to the Emergency.

He said that after polling for the MPTC and ZPTC elections at Vengalayapalem in Guntur rural mandal on Thursday, ballot boxes were unloaded midway at Nallapadu instead of being taken directly to the strong rooms at Nagarjuna University. He questioned the security arrangements during the transportation of the ballot boxes.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said party leaders and members of the public had protested peacefully, but the state government ordered a lathi-charge on them. He also alleged that attempts were made to replace ballot boxes and register cases against party leaders. He questioned the decision to book an MLC in a case involving theft.

Targeting Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that nominations and their scrutiny had been manipulated, polling booths rigged, repeat voting allowed and polling percentages altered. He also accused the Chief Minister of attempting to manipulate ballot boxes and questioned whether he was seeking to undermine democracy in the local body elections.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said the people would not remain silent spectators and would respond to what he described as atrocities.
