A proposed ticket price hike for Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana could invite criticism from audiences, a Telugu distributor said.
Despite recent setbacks for big-ticket films, some Telugu distributors of the Tamil film are reportedly seeking permission from the state governments for an increase in ticket prices.
“Better avoid a ticket hike for a dubbed film. The negative response to the ticket prices for Yash’s Toxic helped Irumudi make more money, as Telugu audiences were upset with the hike and seemingly responded by avoiding the film,” the distributor said.
According to him, Jailer 2 is expected to have ticket prices of around Rs 180 in Tamil Nadu, including multiplexes. However, distributors in the Telugu states are seeking an additional hike of Rs 100 to Rs 200, which could push ticket prices significantly higher for Rajinikanth fans.
“When Rajinikanth is being offered at around Rs 180 in Tamil Nadu, why should Telugu audiences pay Rs 400 to Rs 500? It amounts to taking advantage of the Telugu audience, who have traditionally supported films across industries,” he said.
The distributor said the performance of films such as Coolie, War 2 and Toxic should prompt distributors to reconsider aggressive ticket pricing.
“This should be a lesson for Telugu distributors. Instead of increasing ticket prices in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, they should leave some money in the pockets of audiences, especially during the festive season in October,” he said.
He also urged the Telugu state governments to reconsider granting special ticket hikes for dubbed films. “No other state follows this practice in the same way. We should also avoid it,” he said.
