James Cameron Had the Most James Cameron Response to Andy Samberg’s ‘Avatar’ Fandom

James Cameron is known for making blockbuster hits like The Terminator, Titanic, Aliens and the horned-up Smurf slash fiction known as the Avatar franchise. But Cameron isn’t usually thought of as a particularly funny guy, probably due to all the stories about him screaming at actors and threatening crew members who dare to ask for a bathroom break

But, as we’ve mentioned before, the True Lies director has had a number of comedic cameos over the years. Perhaps most memorably, back in 2010, Cameron popped up on Saturday Night Live, introducing the fifth installment in the “Laser Cats” series. In the sketch, Cameron pitches Lorne Michaels his new project, which the producer is receptive to, until the filmmaker calls out to Andy Samberg and Bill Hader who wheel in a tiny television.

The project is, of course, “Laser Cats 5,” which now features Sigourney Weaver, reprising the role of Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, plus Samberg in a makeshift Na’vi costume.

On the most recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, Hader explained that they secured the Cameron cameo through Weaver, who was hosting the show that week. When Cameron came by the SNL offices, Samberg got to convey his love for the newly-released Avatar, which Cameron responded to in the most James Cameron way possible.

“I remember it was him and Jon Landau, his producer,” Hader recalled. “And when they showed up — he walked in, and Andy, you went, ‘I’ve seen the movie five times!’ And he said, ‘Well, we set out to change movies, and we did.’ Like, Jesus Christ.”

“I mean, you can’t argue with it,” Samberg the Avatar-head chimed in. “He just whipped his dick out and was like, ‘Yep. Stories are true.’”

Samberg also noted that he “could not have been more gassed that Cameron came,” and Hader pointed out that he had memorized all of his lines prior to arriving. “They had cue cards and James Cameron went, ‘I don’t need those.’ He went, ‘Get those out of here, I don’t need ‘em.’”

Clearly Cameron has a lot of respect for SNL, which would explain why he overhauled the logo for his multibillion dollar film franchise simply because of that Ryan Gosling “Papyrus” sketch.
