James Handy’s girlfriend Wendy Gledhill has spoken out for the first time since actor James Handy was allegedly stabbed to death by her son, Michael Gledhill, earlier this week
The girlfriend of Top Gun star James Handy has broken her silence following his shock death this week.
Wendy Gledhill has spoken out following the devastating incident in which her son, Michael Gledhill, allegedly fatally stabbed her partner, James Handy.
The 81 year old actor, recognised for his performances in Arachnophobia, Jumanji, Unbreakable, Logan, and his portrayal of Jimmy in Top Gun: Maverick, was declared dead on Thursday 4 June after sustaining a stab wound to his chest. Michael, the son of James’s partner Wendy, was detained shortly afterwards on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Wendy’s first public remarks came after the Jumanji star’s tragic final moments before the fatal attack. In an interview with The California Post on 5 June, the 76 year old expressed her anguish: “I’m just trying to make it through one day at a time, a minute at a time,” before adding, “I loved James and my son.”
She went on: “I can’t believe my son did it. I’m just trying to… ” before withdrawing into her Tarzana, California, residence. She had previously disclosed to TMZ that her son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, but had ceased taking his medication prior to the alleged attack, reports the Mirror US.
On Thursday 4 June, Los Angeles police confirmed they were examining a fatal stabbing after responding to a disturbing 911 call. According to reports, the alleged perpetrator contacted emergency services declaring, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Officers attended the property to find the actor unconscious in the front garden, having seemingly sustained a stab wound to his chest. The 81 year old was rushed to a local hospital where he was tragically declared dead.
“The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, a resident of Tarzana,” investigators stated in a press release. “He was arrested and transported to Van Nuys Jail where he was booked for one count of murder.”
Wendy also shared a heartfelt message for James’s family. “They know I loved him so much. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry this happened. I’m still in shock. I still can’t comprehend it,” she said.
James enjoyed a distinguished 45-year career, amassing numerous film and television appearances, featuring in beloved productions including Jumanji, The X-Files, Law and Order, and NCIS: Los Angeles, amongst countless others.
Michael remains in custody on $2 million bail. Authorities have yet to disclose a motive behind the tragic killing, nor have they verified Wendy’s assertions that her son had been diagnosed with mental health conditions before the fatal stabbing.
