James and Chloe announced they’d be parting ways in 2023, having tied the knot in 2018, and now James has opened up about the moment he “surprised” her famous parents

James Haskell has revealed the moment he “surprised” Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan after his separation from their daughter, Chloe. James and personal trainer Chloe Madeley confirmed their split in 2023, having married in 2018. At the time, the former couple said they would not disclose the reason for their separation.

Chloe described the months leading up to the breakup as “incredibly scary”, while James previously acknowledged that he wouldn’t be divorced if he put “more time into my marriage than I did Guinness”.

And now the former rugby union star has shared insights about his bond with Chloe’s parents following the split, reassuring them they are “massively important grandparents”.

He told the No Parental Guidance podcast that he grew up familiar with who Richard and Judy were, lauding their presenting abilities and describing them as “TV royalty”, as he disclosed they were “always really nice” to him.

James said: “And I think it’s always hard when someone like me knocks on your door and comes in. Cos they’re quite academic, the family. They’re not…you know, they’re not massive sports fans and stuff.”

He theorised that when somebody like himself comes to “take your daughter out”, you probably think he “hasn’t got anything to say. And so I think they were quietly surprised by kind of how I was.”

James went on to reveal that following the separation, he approached Richard and Judy and told them they remained “important” grandparents to their child, Bodhi, and assured them he’d “never have any beef”.

James said: “After we separated, I just went to both of them and said, ‘Look, you’re both massively important grandparents to Bodhi. You and I have always had a good relationship.

“‘You know, divorces and separation are emotional, they’re dark, they’re difficult, they’re hard. But I said, ‘I have no issues with you guys’. I said, ‘I will never go into the details of our breakdown because it’s not relevant to anyone.’

“I will never slag your daughter off. I will never not support you, and I will always come and see you and I will never have any beef my side. My separation is not with you guys,” adding that he thinks they were “surprised”.

Speaking previously to MailOnline at London’s Pub in the Park festival, James offered further insight into the split, acknowledging that it’s “one of those things in life where some things don’t work out”.

He said: “It’s one of those things in life where some things don’t work out, but I have so much love for my daughter and Chloe. It’s teamwork.”

He added: “What we all forget is when you have children and a marriage finishes, it’s all about the kids. Chloe and I are amazing co-parents. Our priority is always Bodhi.”
