EXCLUSIVE: Jason Derulo has opened up about the changes he has made and the strictly weekly habit he maintains – which will likely come as a shock to fans
Jason Derulo opened up about the strict weekly ritual that keeps him grounded after discussing ‘retiring’ his persona.
Despite performing high-energy shows packed with choreography, pyrotechnics and costume changes, Jason insists his preparation starts long before he steps on stage.
“I pretty much work out before the shows,” he explained exclusively to The Mirror, “I do about 15 minutes of high-intensity cardio and a 30-minute vocal warm-up before the show.”
The singer also revealed he takes part in a special pre-show tradition with his dancers before every performance.
“With all the dancers, we all get together and do a dance ritual that we’ve created over the years, which lasts about seven to 10 minutes, and then we do a prayer.”
But it was his eating habits that may come as the biggest surprise to fans. “I don’t know if it’s weird, but an interesting thing about me is I don’t eat on Fridays,” he said. “I fast every single Friday.”
Jason explained that the practice helps him maintain balance and reset his relationship with food each week.
“I feel like it really balances my life in a lot of ways. It’s allowed me to kind of retrain myself every single week with food. I feel like I have to recalibrate myself after a week. It’s kind of like no eating, and then I’m reintroduced to food in a different kind of way.”
Away from music, the 36-year-old says becoming a father has transformed his outlook on life. Jason shares son Jason King with former partner Jena Frumes and admits parenthood has changed the way he thinks about success and responsibility.
“My life is no longer a singular, selfish endeavour,” he said. “Now it’s like: ‘How do I make sure that he’s not too spoilt? But at the same time, how do I let him have some things that I didn’t have?'”
The singer’s comments come as he embarks on a new musical chapter inspired by both personal experiences and some of his favourite musical genres.
While discussing his latest material, Jason explained that some of his biggest hits were created during a difficult period in his life.
“Those songs were really to get me out of the rut that I was in,” he said of tracks including Wiggle , Talk Dirty and Trumpets . I was really writing happier songs.” His newer music, however, takes inspiration from the sounds he grew up loving.
“This new music has a lot of old feels to it,” he explained. “There’s a lot of 80s vibes, as well as Afrobeat and Afro house vibes. Those mixture of worlds are kind of my favourite times of music and my favourite genres of music.” Jason also admitted that many of his most successful songs were born directly from real-life experiences.
“One hundred per cent,” he said when asked whether he channels his personal life into his music. He pointed to his 2010 hit “Ridin’ Solo” as one example, revealing it was written after heartbreak.
“A girl broke my heart and I felt like I needed to write a song that talked about me loving me because there wasn’t another one,” he said. The star added that fan favourites including It Girl and Whatcha Say were also inspired by events from his own life.
