For Jason Sanjay, making his directorial debut with Sigma has meant stepping into the industry with a surname that already carries enormous recognition. As the son of actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay, questions around his family and the influence of his father have naturally accompanied the film since its announcement. Jason, however, has consistently tried to shift the conversation towards his own work and the team behind the film.

During the promotions of Sigma, the filmmaker had earlier made it clear that Vijay would not be actively promoting the film. Jason explained that he wanted the campaign to remain focused on the movie and its cast and crew. At an event in Salem, he also spoke about the need to establish an identity of his own while acknowledging the influence and support that comes with his family background.

At the trailer and audio launch of Sigma in Chennai, Jason offered a more personal acknowledgement of that support. In his speech, the debutant director thanked his mother Sangeetha, his father Vijay and his sister Divya Saasha.

“I would like to thank my mother. I would like to thank my father, who is the Chief Minister today. And I would like to thank my dear sister Divya,” he said during his speech.

Jason’s words also extended to his uncle Sanjeev, whom he credited with supporting his decision to pursue filmmaking. Recalling the time when he approached Sanjeev after completing college and told him about his plans to become a director, Jason said his uncle immediately backed the decision. He described Sanjeev as “someone I can trust the most in this world.”

The acknowledgement offered a glimpse into the personal network that has stood behind Jason as he takes his first steps as a filmmaker. Rather than presenting his debut solely through his connection to Vijay, the speech highlighted several family members who have played different roles in his journey.

Jason acknowledges support from the film industry

Jason also used the launch event to recognise the filmmakers and actors who have shown their support for Sigma. Among them was filmmaker SS Rajamouli, who Jason said had taken the time to watch the trailer, discuss the film with him and contribute towards its Telugu promotions.

The filmmaker also thanked Dulquer Salmaan, who launched Sigma’s first single, for extending his support to the project. Jason’s list of acknowledgements further included actor Soori, whose journey in the Tamil film industry he said had served as an inspiration.

These names add another dimension to the story surrounding Sigma. While Jason’s family background has inevitably remained part of the conversation, the director appears keen to establish the film through the people who have worked on it and those from within the industry who have supported his first attempt behind the camera.

Sigma marks Jason Sanjay’s first feature as a director, with Sundeep Kishan headlining the film. The project has therefore become an important first step for Jason as he attempts to build a filmmaking career independent of the considerable public profile associated with his family. With the trailer and audio launch now setting the stage for the film’s theatrical release, Jason’s message has remained consistent: the surname may have opened the door to considerable attention, but Sigma is ultimately his opportunity to establish himself as a filmmaker.
