Jerry Jones is calling hogwash on the notion that there is a connection between how much you pay a coach and winning, which his Cowboys have not done a lot of this season.
But the ever-defiant owner and general manager pushed back on any correlation between the two ideas during a radio interview on Tuesday morning when asked about the very topic, as fans sour on head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
“In the NFL – this is after years of looking at all the teams and all the coaches – there is no, there is zero correlation between how much you pay a coach or how many coaches you have as to winning,” Jones claimed while appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “There is no correlation, and that’s a random sample of years and all 32 teams involved. So put that in your hopper and smoke it.”
It wasn’t exactly clear what data points Jones used to come to that conclusion, but it likely won’t sit well with Cowboys fans amid their 3-5 season and coming off an embarrassing loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
The penny-pinching notion about Jones’ coaching hire has only picked up steam as its been noted the number of coaches that are paid more per year than the Cowboys coach, and the success of some of the coaches hired in the same cycle when Schottenheimer was promoted for the job in Dallas.

Schottenheimer is only making $4.5 million per year under his deal, compared to the roughly $12 million that Jaguars coach Liam Coen is making and $13 million that Bears coach Ben Johnson is making.
The Bears and Jaguars both reached the postseason in their first seasons under Johnson and Coen, respectively, and are in the middle of strong starts to the 2026 season.
Cowboys fans have also had to watch former coach Mike McCarthy go to Pittsburgh and help lead the Steelers to a 6-2 start this season.
“The point is that you can be pretty creative in hiring your coaches,” Jones said Tuesday. “You can be creative sometimes when you don’t even know you’re hiring the coaches. And so I’ve had some good experience of hiring people who have never been in the NFL. I’ve had some experience of hiring young coaches, older coaches, and so, and of course, you constantly remind me, as you should, of what my record is and I understand that.
“But I also know that the next you throw the pick, if you were the old California gold miner, you may hit the Comstock lode. And then it is glory hope.”
