FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has expressed his “enormous pain” at the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel.
Owono’s knee crashed into De Miguel’s chest as the pair contested a loose ball during the Segunda Division game between the clubs at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez on Monday.
The Equatorial Guinea international was sent-off but remained on the field while players from both sides, and the medical teams, rushed to De Miguel’s aid.
De Miguel, 30, was taken to hospital but passed away on Tuesday morning.
Owono has received widespread criticism for the challenge and is now the subject of a police investigation for possible involuntary manslaughter.
The 25-year-old’s team-mate Lautaro Spatz spoke out in defence of Owono earlier on Wednesday and the goalkeeper has now broken his silence, admitting his profound grief.
He said in a statement released by FC Andorra: “These are the most difficult days of my life.
“I find it difficult to find the words and I find it very difficult to assimilate anything that has happened. I feel enormous pain for the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family and all the people who loved him.”
Owono says he is prepared for whatever action is taken by the authorities but his immediate priority is honouring the memory of De Miguel.
He added: ”I know that there will be many issues to address, I will face whatever comes with all due respect. But right now, honestly, I can’t think of anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing.
”Rest in peace, Jesus.”
