Jimmy Fallon Made Activist Malala Yousafzai Do a TikTok Trend

We live in dumb times. I mean, the president just had part of the White House demolished so that he could build his own little ballroom, and I’m willing to bet his monarchical renovations on the most symbolic seat of power in the country are serving as a distraction for his much more nefarious deeds. But still, sometimes, I get blown away by the sheer silliness of a certain piece of content.

In this instance, it’s the video of Jimmy Fallon and Malala Yousafzai doing the “Beez in the Trap” TikTok trend. For those who still retain enough brain cells to not know what that is — how fortunate. In any event, a brief explanation: Two people stand back-to-back. At first, you only see the first person in the frame. This person is singing 4 Non Blondes “What’s Going On.” The camera pans slowly to the second person, who is rapping “Beez in the Trap” by Nicki Minaj.

The trend is better when there’s as much of a juxtaposition between the songs as the two people performing the trend. On TikTok, it’s a lot of daughters singing the 4 Non Blondes part, and a lot of dads doing Nicki Minaj’s part. In the case of the promo for The Tonight Show, Fallon sang “What’s Going On,” while Yousafzai performed “Beez in the Trap.”

Listen, I’m not so naive that I believe these late-night shows don’t need to be trying every social media gimmick available to them in order to maintain relevancy. But man, this was tough to watch. It made me feel secondhand embarrassment. This is what the West does: You survive an assassination attempt by the Taliban when you’re a child, and in order to sell books about your life after that, you have to perform minor humiliation rituals with a charisma-less late-night show host.

I’m not alone in feeling like this. Here are a sampling of some of the quote tweets on the video:

  • “30 Rock and The Other Two might as well have been documentaries. Biblical texts even.”
  • “Lord free me from this publicity tour.”
  • “feel like i’m going insane”
  • “As the years go by Jimmy Fallon increasingly looks like he’s being held hostage by his own show.”
  • “4 Non Blondes, Nicki Minaj, Jimmy Fallon and Malala Yousafzai…….. what the hell, sure.”
  • “Your most annoying coworker absolutely loves this shit.”

These are just a small sampling of the reaction. Which, I guess if you’re The Tonight Show and operating under the logic of “all publicity is good publicity” then sure, this is a good situation. But if you’re someone hoping to be taken seriously, this isn’t the consensus you’re going for.

As one user on X so eloquently stated: “This video was created in a lab to specifically piss me off.”
