Nearly two decades after winning the X Factor in 2009, Joe McElderry has returned with new music – which fans dubbed the ‘song of the summer’
X Factor winner Joe McElderry is set to make a chart comeback, nearly two decades after he won the singing competition.
The 35-year-old appeared on the ITV series and was mentored by Cheryl. Their hard work paid off as he beat Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs to be crowned winner in 2009.
After taking a step back from the spotlight, he has now released a new song, Love Me Out Loud, with poignant lyrics about his own dating woes.
“I’m sure everybody’s been through this, where you fall for somebody and know from the get-go this person is so wrong for me,” he said about the reason behind the song. “In the back of your mind, you know it’s going to end in disaster.”
Describing himself as “horrendously single”, he added to the Sun: “It’s like that inner battle with yourself, like, ‘They’re so wrong for us, but I’m in it now and I’ve just got to kind of go with it now because I’ve fallen for them’.
Love Me Out Loud was released last week, and fans clearly couldn’t get enough of the single, judging by the comments on his Instagram page.
“What a Super Summer Single release! This will be on repeat,” a follower cheered, as another agreed: “I love it Jo!!! Sound of the summer. Going to boogie my way into the gym this morning xx.”
“You did not need to go so hard!! Song of the summer! Love love laaaav ittt [sic],” an Instagram user said, as one added: “This song has been in my head for two days.”
Joe already has plans for his pop-dance follow-up, which will reportedly be coming in September. He became a household name after his stint on the X Factor in 2009, and won the show when he was just 18.
Although he missed out on the coveted Christmas number one spot in the charts – as music-lovers downloaded Rage Against The Machine hit Killing in the Name in protest of the show – he went on to release five albums.
He then turned his attention to a stage career, appearing in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cinderella and many more.
