Jon Gruden wants to make a career move.
The former NFL head coach, who previously was an analyst on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” for nine years, now wants to switch places in the commentators booth.
“I was a broadcaster for nine years; hell’s bells,” Gruden, who now works for Barstool Sports, said on The Ira Kaufman Podcast, via JoeBucsFan.com.

“I want to be play-by-play. You know, Frank Gifford, he transitioned into the play-by-play role. I would like to transition. I had nine years of watching these guys — [Mike] Tirico. And I’d like to give that a shot, man.”
Gruden worked for ESPN from 2009-17 in between his stint as the head coach of the Buccaneers and then the Raiders.
He was well liked as an analyst, but never got to show off his true emotions as he attempted to maintain good relationships within the NFL with the hope to someday coach again.
It’s unclear if taking another broadcasting role would be the end of the coaching road for the 62-year-old.
Recently, he was courted by the Jets to join Aaron Glenn’s staff in January, and was linked to college head-coaching jobs during this season, including Arkansas.
“I absolutely love football,” Gruden said on “Pardon My Take” in October 2025. “I love it, and it’s pretty much all I have. I have an office, for the people who don’t know, I’ve got a server in there. I just put a lot of money into a server that collects all the films and allows me to study them. Who knows what will happen, but I’m preparing myself as always to coach.”

An obstacle Gruden may have to get around before landing the job is his active lawsuit against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Gruden alleges the NFL and Goodell led a “malicious and orchestrated campaign” by leaking emails that forced him to resign from the Raiders in 2021.
The backlash from the leaked emails, homophobic and misogynistic language as well as controversial comments about people in the league, pushed Gruden out of the football world completely before joining Barstool in 2024.
He now does a variety of football content for the website, including a YouTube show and podcasts.
