Jon Stewart Is ‘Working on Staying’ at ‘The Daily Show’ Past Current Contract

Jon Stewart was only supposed to serve as the once-weekly host of The Daily Show through the end of the 2024 election cycle. Then again, the 2024 election cycle wasn’t supposed to be our last one.

Back in February 2024, following an extended carousel of rotating guest hosts whose dreams of permanently winning the big chair faded like they were the turnout of Democratic voters, Stewart returned to The Daily Show as its once and future king, opting to serve as the show’s producer and the Monday evening host through the end of Indecision 2024. However, once President Donald Trump also re-assumed office, Stewart decided to stick around and continue to skewer the White House, the political media and the Democratic leadership who are still putting up a paltry defense against the Republican power structure.

Then, this past summer, Trump ally David Ellison acquired Paramount Global and assumed control of Comedy Central and all its shows. Critics have worried that, following the axing of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Stewart would be next on the list of probably-politically-motivated merger casualties, but, now, Stewart is hinting that he intends to stick around on The Daily Show for even longer — and he won’t sell his soul to Skydance in order to do it.

During the New Yorker Festival this past weekend, Stewart spoke to New Yorker editor David Remnick about the changes occurring at his parent company as well as his own future at Paramount, assuring The Daily Show fans that, “Were working on staying,” according to The Daily Beast. With just weeks left on his current contract with Comedy Central, Stewart is keen on continuing his work at The Daily Show, but that doesnt mean he necessarily approves with how his new corporate overlords are handling the business.

“Look, the other thing to remember is it’s not as clear cut as all that. They’ve already done things that I’m upset about,” Stewart understated of Skydance and Paramount’s habitual appeasement of Trump at the expense of their employees. “But then if I had integrity, maybe I would stand up and go, ‘I’m out.’ Or maybe the integrity thing to do would be to stay in it and keep fighting in the foxhole.”

Regardless of what the morally correct choice may be, Stewart says that he has already made up his mind, although his future under Paramount isn’t entirely up to him. “You don’t compromise on what you do, and you do it until they tell you to leave,” Stewart said of his ethos in his second tenure on The Daily Show, no matter how much longer it may last.

Undoubtedly, Trump would be very displeased with his cronies at Skydance if they extended Stewart’s contract, but I’m sure that some part of the President respects Stewart’s conviction. “Don’t compromise” and “do it until they tell you to leave” is basically how Trump closed out his first term.
