According to comedy filmmaking giant Judd Apatow, President Donald Trump isn’t trying to make us laugh when he posts A.I.-generated memes of himself literally crapping on his critics — actually, the soul-destroying lack of humor is the point.
So far in his second term, Trump has proven that he’s the biggest shitposter in the history of the White House, which isn’t a particularly political observation. For Trump’s supporters, seeing a new outrageous clip personally posted by the President on his own social media platform is the highlight of their day and a sign that their side is winning the culture war. For the President’s critics, the ceaseless stream of derivative, unfunny and A.I.-jumbled slop that our government-run social media accounts post daily is a demonstration of how truly, deeply undignified our democracy has become.
In his recent appearance on the On with Kara Swisher podcast, Apatow postulated that, contrary to their sloppy, nonsensical appearance, Trump’s memes are actually part of a carefully planned and executed propaganda campaign, but the target isn’t Trump’s base, nor is it even undecided voters.
Don’t Miss
Apatow says that Trump’s memes are made to make Democrats “lose hope” with their vulgar and demoralizing lack of comedic value.
During the podcast, Swisher and Apatow talked about how Trump uses humor and spectacle to give his most harmful actions as President a playful disguise. The pair discussed the above video that Trump recently posted in response to the “No Kings” protests that broke out in cities across America, and, at one point, Swisher asked her guest of Trump’s methods for addressing the public, “Is changing it to entertainment effective? Is that worrisome to you?”
“My feeling is that it’s always more complicated than we know,” Apatow said of the method behind Trump’s social media madness and the “dumbest memes” he regularly posts. “I don’t think this meme-ification is based on someone’s instinct. I think there’s think tanks and psychological studies, and everything that’s being done is being done because it has been proven to work as propaganda. And we take it, like, ‘Oh, he’s being crazy! I can’t believe he said that, I can’t believe he posted that!'”
However, Apatow argues, the outrageousness of the President’s social media presence isn’t the goal in itself, nor is Trump posting just to entertain his base. “I think there’s literally psychiatrists figuring out how you make people lose hope, how you make people think that they can’t win a fight,” Apatow told Swisher.
According to the 40-Year-Old Virgin and Superbad director, Trump is waging psychological warfare on the opposition, and platforms such as Twitter and Truth Social are the battlegrounds.
Sadly, if Apatow is right that Trump really is posting this garbage just to trigger the Libs into depression, that plan seems to be working — the outrage over Trump’s jet-flying, shit-dumping A.I. slop video practically overtook the political energy generated by the protests themselves.
Trump is literally trying to shitpost us into fascism.
