Mike Macdonald revealed that quarterback Sam Darnold will not play this weekend for the Seattle Seahawks against the Arizona Cardinals due to a quad injury.
Darnold ended the game on Monday against the Chicago Bears without any apparent injury issues, but Macdonald has revealed news of a quad injury and a cracked rib after Seattle’s crushing loss at Lumen Field.

Drew Lock, who is also battling his own fitness issue, will start the game on Sunday against their NFC West rivals. Lock has already beaten the Cardinals this season after stepping in for Darnold following his previous injury earlier in the season.
However, there are a number of Seahawks fans who feel as if there may be more to Darnold not playing this weekend, despite Macdonald saying the QB had suffered two separate injuries.
Seattle Seahawks fans think Sam Darnold has been soft-benched
After winning the Super Bowl in February, Darnold has entered the 2026 season in pretty dreadful form. Since returning from his opening-day injury, Darnold has thrown at least one interception in all six of his games for Seattle. This has led to some fans feeling as if he is being taken out of the firing line this weekend.

‘Basically a soft benching for Darnold,’ replied one Seahawks fan on X after hearing the news.
‘There’s a real possibility Sam Darnold might’ve played his last game last week. This is a soft benching,’ one fan even suggested.
Darnold has thrown 10 touchdowns this season and nine interceptions, with games against the Washington Commanders, San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos being lost due to the number of turnovers on offense.
‘The classic fake injury soft benching,’ replied another.
‘There’s no way this isn’t just an excuse to bench him right?’ added one fan.

Although Darnold has been far from his best this season, a game against the Cardinals would surely be the perfect opportunity for him and the Seahawks to get their season back on track with a strong offensive showing. Yet some fans still think that Darnold is being made to sit this one out due to his poor form.
‘Soft benching, thank you, Mike,’ one happy Seahawks fan said.
‘A sore thigh sounds like a polite demotion,’ replied another.
