Sahara Ray, a model who dated Justin Bieber, died aged 34, just months after becoming a mum, and reports have now shared a cause of death
A model who dated Justin Bieber, Sahara Ray, died aged 34 over the weekend and her cause of death has now been reported. According to sources, Sahara Ray was on life support until Sunday after a fentanyl overdose.
Sahara first shot to fame in 2016, when she was romantically linked to Canadian singer Justin Bieber. The pair were photographed skinny dipping whilst on holiday together. The model had also been linked to Australian singer Cody Simpson.
In the decade since, Sahara built a successful modelling career and founded her own swimwear line, called Sahara Ray Swim. She moved to Los Angeles to study at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She also established herself on social media, modelling her own designs.
A source told the Mail that Sahara was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles on Friday night and placed on life support until her family made the decision to switch it off. It is unknown if the reported overdose was accidental or not.
The model’s loved ones were all gathered around to say their goodbyes. The tragic death occurred just nine months after the Australian model became a mum to her daughter, Snow.
Sahara’s mother, Gretchen Bach, who shared her daughter with Australian surfer Tony Ray, paid tribute to her, remembering the model as driven and committed. She told the Mail: “Sahara was incredibly passionate and kind young woman who loved her family, fashion, her daughter Snow, and surfing.
“We’re feeling the love that is pouring in from her cherished friends, fans and the many communities that she was part of around the world.”
Sahara’s sister Ruby also shared a tribute, posting pictures of their childhood online and said she was a “force of nature” whose loss had shattered her world.
She wrote: “My beautiful big sister, Sahara. The most vivacious, intelligent, hilarious, kind, empathetic and breathtakingly beautiful soul.
“Sahara has moved from this life into another, and I am left trying to comprehend how someone so full of life can no longer be here to live it.”
Adding that she idolised her sister, Ruby continued: “From the moment I entered this world, I looked up to her. In my eyes, she was everything extraordinary about being human.
“I just want my big sister. I want more time. More laughter. More conversations. More of her. God, grief hurts. It is the most excruciating, all-consuming pain I have ever been doused in. If love alone could have kept you here, Sahara, you would have lived a thousand lifetimes. I will spend the rest of mine loving you.”
On social media, Sahara was open about her mental health battles, including a struggle with addiction. In December 2021, she shared that she went to rehab in Malibu for drug and alcohol addiction. She said on YouTube: “I just checked into a mental health, wellness, drug and alcohol addiction treatment centre retreat. It’s really beautiful. It’s in Malibu. I’m really excited to share my story with you guys. I’ll be here for 30 days. This is day one.”
In 2024, the model faced another setback, when she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes the immune system to attack its own nerves. Sahara developed the condition after a road accident, when she was hit by a drunk driver.
After the accident, she noticed that she was struggling to eat for several days and that she often experienced numbness and tingling in her feet. The symptoms spread up her legs and, after an emergency hospital visit, she had to rely on a wheelchair and walking frame.
She told her followers: “This has been really hard to deal with and I’ve been trying to keep a good attitude and be hopeful that my feeling comes back.”
