Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir announced on Monday that the second phase of the construction of his Babri Masjid-styled mosque in Murshidabad of West Bengal would start on December 6 with a congregation of five lakh Muslims. He also informed that the proposed mosque would be inaugurated on the same date two years later.

After sharing his plans, the Nowda MLA however threatened to lay a siege for any disruption by the police of his event this year. “If they dare to obstruct them, religious Muslims across the state will lay a siege on National Highway 12 to give them a befitting reply.”

Reacting to his threat, Rejinagar BJP MLA Sakharov Sarkar said, “Muslims have enough faith to construct a Babri Masjid. But if Mr Kabir tries to divide people by playing religious cards, he will get a befitting reply also. He should not forget that the chief minister and home minister is Suvendu Adhikari. If any untoward situation unfolds, he will be confined in his own house the way it happened to him on the day of Rejinagar Assembly bypoll.”

Mr Kabir later blamed “some people” for spreading rumours against him about pocketing money from the funds for the construction work. He declared a receipt of ₹8,68,14,520 donations from the public and an expenditure of ₹8,31,49,569 for construction of the three-storeyed mosque building which is estimated to come up at a cost of around ₹87 crores.
