Kalaburagi: The Ashok Nagar police have cracked two house burglary cases by arresting an interstate house-breaking and theft (HBT) offender, a native of Telangana, and recovering 117 grams of stolen gold jewellery worth about Rs 20 lakh.
City Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa SD told reporters that the accused has been identified as Syed Hameed (46), a native of Warangal in Telangana who was working as an autorickshaw driver in Hyderabad.
The breakthrough came during the investigation into a house burglary reported on May 29, when unidentified persons allegedly broke into a locked house in Kalaburagi while the occupants were away and escaped with 143 grams of gold jewellery, silver articles and coins, and cash totalling Rs 75,000.
Acting on technical and scientific evidence, a special investigation team traced and arrested Syed Hameed. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to his involvement in two house burglary cases registered at the Ashok Nagar Police Station, including the May 2025 case.
Dr Sharanappa said the investigation received a major boost after experts recovered a fingerprint. The print was matched with records in the national fingerprint database, enabling police to identify and trace the accused.
The commissioner described Hameed as a habitual interstate offender allegedly involved in burglaries.
“As per the information collected so far, he is involved in over 85 house theft cases. We have information that he has operated not only in Telangana and Karnataka but also have information of him going to Maharashtra, Kerala and Gujarat. We have asked our officers to collect further details,” he said.
According to the investigation, the accused travelled by train to Kalaburagi City, conducted reconnaissance of residential localities in the morning, identified locked houses, committed burglaries during the daytime and left the city soon afterwards.
The commissioner said the accused, who worked as an auto rickshaw driver, appeared to commit burglaries whenever he needed money.
Appealing to the public, Dr Sharanappa urged residents not to disturb crime scenes and to immediately dial 112 after discovering a crime. He also advised people to install CCTV cameras in houses or at least in residential colonies and make use of the city’s Locked House Beat System, under which residents can inform police before leaving their homes locked for extended periods.
He said the initiative had contributed to a decline in house burglary cases in the city.
The Commissioner appreciated the investigation team led by Ashok Nagar Police Station inspector Satish Kanimeshwar and presented them with certificates of appreciation.
